Sewer Smoke Testing Scheduled to
Begin Week of November 2

Lowell Regional Wastewater Utility (LRWWU) is scheduled to begin sewer system smoke testing the week of November 2, 2026, as part of its ongoing Sewer System Evaluation Survey (SSES) program. Testing helps identify locations where rainwater and other unwanted water enter the sewer system, allowing the Utility to prioritize repairs and improvements.

What to Expect

During testing, crews introduce specially manufactured smoke into sewer lines and observe where it emerges. Residents may notice white or gray smoke coming from sewer manholes, roof plumbing vents, or other locations. These observations help crews identify potential defects and connections that allow unwanted water into the sewer system.

Smoke should not enter a building with properly functioning plumbing and water-filled drain traps. Smoke entering a building may indicate a dry drain trap or a plumbing issue that could also allow sewer gases inside.

How to Prepare

Residents and businesses can prepare by running or pouring water into infrequently used sinks, showers, tubs, and floor drains to fill the plumbing traps.

If someone at your property has respiratory concerns or mobility limitations, contact LRWWU at 978-674-4248 to discuss preparations before testing occurs in your area.

If smoke enters your building, leave the building and notify the testing crew or call LRWWU. If you suspect a fire or are unsure of the source of smoke, call 911.
